Team Building Activity | Life Enrichment

"What's in a name? ":

"People love the sound of their name."    This activity takes the name to a new level and builds rapport by creating a puzzle with their names.

**Note:  This requires some advance notice to the participants. **

Ask each person to find out about the origin of their name(s).  How did they get their names?  Perhaps they were named after someone or something.  Perhaps their name got changed. Perhaps there has been a family pattern of selecting names.

If they have no history on their name(s), have them look up the meaning of their name (there are books on names and information online as well).

Have them write/type out their story or meaning of their name on a separate sheet  excluding their name and bring it with them to the meeting/event.  Advise them to exclude any personal information that might give it away who they are (i.e. my parent's Bob and Jan, etc.)

You can put these up around the room and have people go around reviewing and then making a guess of who they think that story/meaning belongs to.

OR

Have them each pick out a sheet that isn't theirs.  Direct them to come up with three questions (and write them on a 3 x 5 card) to use to help them uncover who that sheet represents.  They are only allowed to ask those three questions; No other questions. They are not allowed to ask "is this you?" or any variation of that.  When answering one of the three questions of someone else, they are to be honest with their answers yet they are not to clue the other person in that it is them (i.e. don't say "that's me).

After everyone has had an opportunity to guess who belongs to which sheet(s), you will review each story/meaning as a group.  Ask people to state who they think it is.  You can then ask the person who the story/meaning is about to please stand up...." will this real mystery person, please stand up now".

Materials:

  • masking tape
  • 3 x 5 card to write down their three questions
  • one sheet of paper during the event to document their guesses
  • pen

Suggestions & Substitutions:

  • .  Have a prize for the story/meaning that had the most incorrect answers
  •    Have a prize for the person/people that had the most correct answers
  •    Create two teams and have them compete as a group (collect the sheets from each group separately and then have guess on the people/sheet of the other group
  •    Allow for post mingling time after the activity and debrief.  I recommend having some food/drink during this time.

After the activity, here are some sample debriefing questions you may want to ask (use these and also ones that fit with what you noticed):

What were your three questions?

How did you come up with your questions?

Now that you have done this activity, how would you modify your questions?

What strategies did you use to discover who belonged to the sheet(s)?

What was challenging?

How did having only three questions limit you?

How did you feel?

What was/came easy for you?

What would you change if you were to do this activity in another group?

What did you learn about yourself?

What did you learn about others?

What had you feel more connected to others?

How would you grade your listening in this activity (using A - F grading system)?

How many of you felt heard?  How would you grade people on listening to you?

What got in your way of listening to others?

What types of things went on that distracted you?

What strategies supported you in listening?

Become the Champion you were born to be!

"The actions you take and how you enjoy your life along the way will determine your ultimate happiness" ~ Juls Foos

***************************

Below are 6 success champion strategies

**************************************************************

1)  Strong Relationships

Look back over history and you will discover that the super achievers had others that helped them accomplish their success.  If you think you can go it alone,  you may end up alone and not ever get to the level that is possible! What's your support team today?  What weaknesses and gaps do you see that require some work? (hint: a great support team has people with different talents, personality types and expertise).

2)  Be a person of integrity

A person who does what they say they are going to do consistently are trusted and sought after!  In addition, when you do what  you say you will do, you are programming the most powerful tool you have, your brain!  What kind of programming are you putting in your brain, flawed and confusing programming or clear powerful programming.

3)  Get to know yourself and find strategies that work for YOU!

What are your interests, motivators, strengths, skills, experiences?  What are the things you love to do? How can you bring your "loves" to what you do?

There are tons and tons of "how to" books out there.  If they all worked for everyone, why isn't everyone using them and finding success in them?  Most people buy these types of books and think "Ah ha! This book is the solution to my situation" only to find them becoming another "shelf help book" gathering dust.  Why is this?  It is because we are all different and what works for one person will not work for everyone.  We can gain some knowledge but the real test is can you apply what you learned and can you sustain it.  Find strategies that work for you and consider hiring a coach to help you discover the strategies that tap into your strengths, motivation, and personality.  After discovering the strategies, a coach can help you integrate them into your life, work and circumstances so they can be sustained.

4)  Identify & Eliminate Obstacles

What stops you or blocks you from taking action?  What things do you procrastinate on?  What are the benefits of that procrastination?  What are your beliefs?  Champions are not only dreamers and doers, they also identify obstacles to eliminate or turn them into opportunities.

5)  Take Inspired Action

Inspired action means that you are energized, knowing where you are headed and you loose track of time because you are enjoying yourself.  One example that you may be able to relate to is on Christmas morning, I would wake up early without an alarm clock so very excited to start the day and experience the gifts, food, and people that the day would bring.  Now as an adult there are many days that I feel this same way because I purposely do things to create this energy and excitement.

What inspired action do you want to take and experience?

6)  Celebrate & Appreciate

Take the time to celebrate and appreciate before moving on to the next goal.  I am a goal oriented person who finishes one goal and was then focusing immediately upon another goal.  I didn't allow myself the time to really take in what I just accomplished and this left me never quite feeling satisfied.  I found that when I purposely took the time to celebrate and acknowledge all that I had done, I found a level of satisfaction that I never knew possible.

Spend some time becoming the champion you were born to be and create the life you truly love, which is for your lifetime, and feel the satisfaction you are missing!
